Independent Retail: What it Takes to Thrive in the Age of ‘i'

Independent Retail: What it Takes to Thrive in the Age of ‘i'

Sunday, February 23
1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Location: Room 28

Changes in the retail industry are happening faster than ever before, transforming the retail store, and how retailers go to market and interact with their shoppers. Retailers can embrace this change, avail themselves of capabilities never before possible, or be disrupted into irrelevancy. And disruption is exactly what’s happening as the industry undergoes gut-wrenching change as decades of product-first practices give way to a true customer-first retail experience.

Independent retailers are positioned for an exciting future, able to take advantage of new technologies to help transform their businesses. But what’s between here and there are systems and processes that have been built over decades for that product-first world that is rapidly disappearing. Retailers need a plan.

The afternoon begins with helping retailers understand the forces at work and looking at how new capabilities are changing competition. With that foundation, we’ll identify how retailers can position themselves for success, including developing a clear strategy, putting together a roadmap, and creating a culture of innovation that is a requisite for the new world we live in.

Today is the slowest pace of change you will experience for the rest of your life. The time is now to reenvision retail for the future.

Join the CART team and leading retail industry executives for a three-part event on Sunday afternoon leading up to the opening of the NGA Show.

Agenda:

1:00pm - 1:10pm: CART Event Opening

1:10pm - 2:00pm:  Session 1: New Capabilities are Changing Competition: Creating a Strategy to Win

The old rules no longer apply in a world of exponential change. AI and machine learning are changing the very nature of competition, poised to disrupt the decades-old business model of traditional retail. This session will explain these changes and help retailers develop a strategy for success in the time ahead.

This session will include a panel discussion featuring key retail and wholesale executives discussing how their companies are grappling with these changes.

2:00pm - 2:10pm: Break

2:10pm - 2:50pm:  Session 2: Getting tactical: Systems, processes, and practices needed in the Age of ‘i’

Building on the strategy developed earlier, this session will focus on the systems, processes, and practices needed for success. Gain ideas on how to assess your current capabilities and assembling a roadmap to the future. Hear from industry experts who have led innovation and from a panel of retail executives.

2:50pm - 3:00pm: Break

3:00pm - 3:45pm: Session 3: The Need for Speed

Tech-fueled innovation is growing exponentially, getting faster every day. Learn how to make your organization move faster and become more open to new ways of doing things. Creating a culture of innovation and a process for how your company can speed up making decisions, launching pilots and deploying new capabilities, is more important than any specific technology.
